Starting Your Child's Swimming Journey: What You Need to Know

March 27, 2023

Swimming is an essential skill that every child should learn. Not only is it a fun and exciting activity, but it can also significantly increase their safety and independence. As a parent, it's vital to teach your child how to swim and make it a part of their early childhood experience. In this blog, we’ll discuss the benefits of teaching your child how to swim and what you need to know to get started.

When is the right time to start taking my baby swimming?

The answer to this question is simple: the earlier, the better. Babies have a natural affinity for water and starting them early can help them develop essential motor skills and confidence in the water. Typically, babies can start swimming lessons as early as six months old, but it's important to check with your paediatrician to ensure your baby is ready.

What do I need to take with me?

When taking your baby to the pool, you'll need to pack a few essential items. A swimsuit, swim diapers and a towel are necessary. You may also want to consider a hat or sunscreen to protect their delicate skin from the sun. Goggles and a swimming cap are also recommended for added protection and comfort.

Keeping babies safe in the water

Safety should be your number one priority when taking your baby swimming. Even if your baby is comfortable in the water, it's important to keep a close eye on them at all times. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Always hold your baby above water, of if they’re capable of swimming independently, stay within arm's reach.
  • Use a baby float or pool noodle to help support your baby's head and neck.
  • Choose a shallow pool or a baby pool designed for infants.
  • Avoid taking your baby swimming if they're sick or have an open wound.

Teaching your child how to swim

Swimming can be a fun and exciting activity for kids, but it's important to start them off with the basics. Start with simple exercises such as blowing bubbles, kicking their legs and floating on their back. As they become more comfortable in the water, you can gradually introduce new skills such as paddling and swimming strokes.
