Your Baby Swimming Lessons Questions Answered

June 3, 2022

Swimming is a key skill that you will be thinking about from the moment your baby comes into the world, but how do you know where to start? In this guide, we run down all of your baby swimming lessons questions and answer them.

How Do I Teach My Baby To Swim?

Teaching your baby to swim begins with making them confident around water, so start with splashing around in the bath at home from birth before researching baby classes with qualified professionals.

They will slowly begin to develop motor skills from there, and once you both feel more comfortable in the pool, you can start taking them outside of lesson times if you wish. Some pools have specific baby and toddler open sessions to ensure a relaxed environment.

When Should I Begin Baby Swimming Lessons?

There is no definite answer to when you should first begin taking your baby to swimming lessons; it is a personal choice. Some specialist newborn baby sessions can start as early as 6 weeks to get them used to the feeling of being in the water and for you to bond with them.

Actual swimming (or should we say splashing?) is more likely to begin at 3 months. It is recommended that you start professionally supervised lessons as soon as you feel is right for you and your baby, so that they can become familiar and confident with water from a young age.

Are Baby Swimming Lessons Worth It?

Baby swimming lessons are key in developing your baby’s confidence around water which will make them safer, with young babies much more adaptable to learning to swim than older children.

It's also considered excellent exercise for them which will benefit their coordination, balance, muscle strength, and cardiac health.

All of this leads to increased appetite and better sleep, making your job as a parent that little bit easier. But most importantly, splashing around is great fun for you and your baby, giving you an activity to pass the time and increase your bond.

What Do You Wear To A Baby Swimming Lesson?

Your baby will need specific swim nappies; these prevent leaks and don’t retain water. On top of this, they should wear a thermal wet suit or baby wrap which are available for all ages.

All you will need is whatever swimming costume or bikini you feel you will be most comfortable in.

What Do You Take To A Baby Swimming Lesson?

Make sure you take a towel for yourself and your baby as well as clothes to change into. You may want to take a large towel with a hood or a robe that your baby can wear to keep them warm immediately after.

Consider taking their favourite bath toy, if they have one, as the familiarity will help them relax in the pool.
